Beat the Streets Chicago programming at the new Wrestling and Enrichment Facility at 5985 S. Archer got off to a phenomenal start this summer.
We held six one-week youth camps, one high school camp and a twice-weekly evening session. At the end, we had 589 registrations, 70% of which were Chicago Public School students. 30% of registrations came from students attending Chicago area faith-based schools or suburban schools.
The 589 registrations represent 330 unique wrestlers, indicating that on average, a participant registered for more than one session.
We had attendees from 142 unique schools, demonstrating a widespread demand for wrestling throughout the City.
We offered over $31,000 in summer camp scholarships to CPS students. This was funded in part by a $15,000 grant from CPS, for which we are extremely grateful.
We also are extremely grateful to the UNC powerhouse team of Tony Ramos, Austin O'Connor and Jaime Hernandez. These inspirational Chicagoans-turned-Tar Heels led our high school camp for both boys and girls.
In addition to summer camps, we opened our facility in early June to students preparing for the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association (IWCOA) state series, which was held in lieu of the IHSA state tournament. 154 unique participants trained with us, most coming more than once as we had over 400 "check-ins" during the two-week period. Beat the Streets Chicago was especially proud to offer a training site and coaches to students whose schools were unable to extend the truncated, rescheduled high school wrestling season to accommodate the IWCOA tournament.
